 Grade Four Nickerson

WELCOME to a new school year! My name is Kristine M. Nickerson and I'm looking forward to teaching the new class. As time goes on the children will progress easily into a new school and a new routine.

The homework notebook is to be signed by the parents each day, whether we have written reminders down or not. It is my way to see that you are aware of their homework and the notices being sent out for you to review.

We have already started our spellings. The children are usually given 12 words for the week to study. If it is a full week of school, they will usually have to study the first six words for Tuesday, the next six words for Wednsday, and all twelve words for Thursday. When the school week is shortened to a four day week the routine for testing will be the same but on different days. They will be told when there will be no spellings for the week.

The children are presently working on Data Management(Graphing) counting by two's three's, fours etc... and reviewing their facts. It would be appreciated and benificial for your child if you can have your child count by two's, threes, anf four's  and review their facts. They always seem to enjoy an activity that involves using the dice. They roll the two dice and add the two numbers to get the sum.

In Social Studies we are studying the past and museums. The children will be asked with your assistance to find an artifact(an old object) belonging to their family or someone close to them to write the requested information and to draw a picture. Please remind them to proofread their information, print or write neatly and to use the space to draw and colour their picture .

If you need to contact me about anything, you may do so through the homework notebook or by contacting the school after school or during the noon time.

October

Two months of school has almost passed. It seems the time is just passing so quickly but not before we do some activities for Hallowe'en. Our class will have some organized activities on Friday, October 30th. The children will also have gym, music and french on Friday. Each child willl be asked to bring in some type of fruit for our fruit tray. We'll have some juice and a plate of cookies or cake to satisfy our sweet tooth. I feel this will provide them with a healthy snack since they'll recieve treats on Saturday.

The grade four class has been divided into two groups for math. My math class is reviewing Data Management and presently working on Representing Numbers and Whole Numbers. If you'd like to review reading numbers and writing the number to ten thousands, this would give your child some practice in this area. The math group will be adding and subtracting also.

The children are enjoying the unit on Rocks and Minerals. Many have brought in their unique findings to share with the class. On Wednesday, October 28th we'll be sharing and looking at the rocks they have found.

Thank You,
K. Nickerson
