Research on Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is a process in which the reader constructs meaning using as the building materials the information on the printed page and the knowledge stored in the readers head. It involves intentional thinking, during which meaning is constructed through interactions between text and reader.

Reading is comprehension. Comprehension is what reading is all about. Decoding without comprehension is simply word barking-being able to articulate the word correctly without understanding its meaning. Effective comprehenders not only make sense of the text they are reading, they can also use the information it contains.

Home Reading

Home reading is an impotant part of many students' routines. The more they read, the better readers they will likely become. However, many students only pretend to read. Some students aren't yet hooked on reading. Others feel frustrated by books that are too hard or bored by books that are too easy. If you doubt that your child is truly reading (and not faking it), have your child read something out loud to you. It is important to note, though, that many fluent readers prefer to read silently.

Student with good reading comprehension think about what they are reading and make personal connections. Discussing what they have read also helps them to make sense of the text.

Please try to find the 15 -20 minutes a night for your child to read, the reading habit needs to be established early.
