 Grade Three Bower

Welcome to Grade 3 Bower 2009/2010

I am including some information about the grade 3 program for the 2009/2010 school year. I hope this is helpful!

Communication

At the end of each month I will be sending the students binders home. In the binder you will find a news letter from me, spelling scores, mental math quizzes and examples of some of the work we have been doing that month. At the back of the work there will be a sheet for you to sign and make comments if you wish. Send the binder back to school with the work still in it and at the end of the year you will have a portfolio of your childs work.

Spellings

I send home spelling sheets that will include 3 or 4 lessons. I focus on spelling patterns which are important for the students to learn as they are very much a part of our English language. If they learn a spelling pattern it will help them in spelling many other words. Please review these words with your child even if you only do a couple a night and then review them all before test day. The students will do a practice test on Thursdays to help them know which words they need more practice on. The tests will be on Fridays unless there is no school on Friday then it will be on Thursday.

Mental Math

Mental math is part of the math curriculum. Each week I introduce a new strategy on Monday and we practice it throughout the week. On Friday I give the students a paper quiz. The quiz will be included in their binder so you can see how they are doing. Some strategies students will find easier then others. On the paper quiz at the top I write the name of the strategy and show an example of how it works.

Grade 3 Assessments

Grade 3 students write 2 assessments throughout the year. They have just written the Early Language Literacy Assessment. It is written over a period of 3 days for about 90 minutes each day. Parents will recieve the results later in the school year.

The Early Math Literacy Assessment will be written during the first week of June. It is written over a 2 day period for about 90 minutes each day. Parents will get the results when their child is in Grade 4.

When the students are writing the assessments it is very important that they get a good nights sleep and a good breakfast. It is also very important they get to school on time as the assessment is supposed to begin at 8:30.
