English with Mr. Young:

For 7-Levac, Bishara, and Young I would like to remind parents that students in these
classes should be working on their independent novel study projects on their own at home.   This means reading their novels and working on their six responses.  Day 6 is our
designated reading day, but students will need to do some work at home as well.  If they
are finished their books, they will still be expected to read something else during these
classes whether they bring it themselves, or get it from me in class.  Extra reading days
will be assigned periodically throughout the year as well (students will be informed in
advance of these if they are expected to bring their books).

Math Night at the Grove:

Math night at the Grove for all parents who are interested in learning about the math program. It is going to be at 6:30 tomorrow night (Wednesday) in the cafeteria.

School Based Immunization Program for 2009-2010:

The H1N1 Human Swine Influenza Pandemic has created additional demands on Public Health’s human resources as we plan for mass immunization clinics.  In order to ensure Nova Scotians continue to receive the best and most essential services, a provincial decision was made to offer the school-based immunization program to students in Grade 10 only for this school year.  The grade 7 immunization program is on hold for the 2009-2010 school year.

We are planning additional clinics next school year for the grade 7 students that we have deferred, ensuring that no student misses a vaccine they are eligible to receive.  This will mean that during the 2010-2011 school year, immunizations will be offered to both the grade 7 and 8 students.  See attached memo.

If you have any questions about the school-based immunization program please contact Public Health Services at 742-7141.

What is the workshop?

The workshop, which is entitled "Making Connections - Empowering families" will be 8 weeks long. It's funded by the IWK - Community Grants division. The tentative dates will be Jan. 28 - Mar. 11. It will also serve as a vehicle for parents to build a network with one another and share their experiences and learn from one another.

Participants will need to have access to the internet.

Memorial Club News:

The Memorial Club has had a very busy September/October. Assisting The Lion's Club, VON Seniors Expo, Over 55 Tournament, Opening Of The New Yarmouth Municipal Council Building, Firefighter's Torchlight Parade, Veteran's Place Memorial Service, Honour Guard For Brigidare General Naesmith, Honour Guard For Walter Parnell Funeral. Wow! A Special thank you to Teachers Darcie DeViller and Chris Young for outstanding help and organization.
Tuesdays meetings are very important. We are now practicing for our Remembrance Service which will be held here at Maple Grove on Thursday, November 05, 2009. The service starts at 1:00 p.m. if all goes well. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Baking needed: We are accepting baked goodies for our Nov. 05, 2009 service. Sandwiches, Cookies, Cakes, Cinnamon Rolls etc. All home baked goodies are welcome. Please drop them off at the School on or the day before our Nov. 05 service. Veterans come to MGEC from all over the province and we do feed them well. We are known for that. No nuts please.
We are looking for donations to help us with the upkeep of our new monument. More names of our fallen soldiers have been added and it looks like we will need to add a new
granite slab sooner than we expected. The estimated cost is $5000.00.  Any financial help
would be greatly appreciated. Make cheques out to
The Memorial Club Monument  Fund.
