School Dress Code
July 22, 2003
"It is the policy of the Tri -County District School Board that students shall be attired in clothing that does not contain slogans or illustrations that promote racial intolerance or illegal products or that may cause offense to any individuals.
PREAMBLE
The principal or designate shall be responsible for informing all students and their parents of the student dress code at the beginning of the school year and any revision to the dress code made during the school year.
The Board relies on parental discretion and good judgment to guide the students in making appropriate clothing choices for school.
The Board expects staff to set an example for students.
1. Students are expected to wear clothes appropriate for the time, place and occasion.
2. A student’s dress, and appearance, shall
a. be safe, appropriate and not disrupt or interfere with the educational process;
b. recognize that extremely brief garments such as tube tops, crop tops, net tops,
halter tops, spaghetti straps, plunging necklines (front and /or back), skirts or
shorts shorter than mid thigh and see-through garments are not appropriate;
c. ensure that underwear is completely covered with outer clothing;
d. not include the wearing of hats in the classroom except for a medical or religious
purpose or for special promotions within the school such as “hat day”.
3. Any student who refuses to adhere to the dress code shall be subject to discipline up
to and including an in-school suspension for the day. Any student who repeatedly fails
to comply with the dress code shall be subject to further discipline.
4. An SAC that wishes to develop a dress code requiring students to wear a ‘uniform look’ may do so. This ‘uniform look’ shall allow for reasonable attire and vendor options for compliance. Students shall not be penalized academically or otherwise discriminated against nor denied attendance for nonparticipation in a school’s ‘uniform look’.
However, reasonable communications, consultation and incentive measures may be employed to encourage full compliance. The Director of Education or designate shall ensure that resources are identified to assist economically disadvantaged students to adhere to a school’s ‘uniform look’ requirements."
